6 years on – still we laugh- Review in Reverse

The laughter was so contagious last Sunday as I shared a memory, that I needed to repeat my story to a wider audience….

This was June 2011….

We were leaving London for Faliraki, Rhodes, an island in the Aegean Ocean, known as the Sun Island or the Island of Light.  My first time, but an old favourite of my husbands.  It would be hot!  A holiday place of magic, beach and sunshine.

“You must visit Lindos, and old Rhodes and the valley of the butterflies!” , friends suggested…la la la

“And you must try the local foods on offer! la la la

I needed to relax, see the beach and have less stress!

The plane arrived on time, the transfer coach was late.  There was no breeze and about 27 degrees at 11.00pm.  We were the last passengers to be dropped off by the coach, when we arrived at our Hotel, starving and thirsty.  No welcoming brightly lit signs like the other high rise hotels, a broken pole holding up an aging excuse for an entrance sign.  No lights on in the hotel nor around the building.  But the driver pulled up and turned off his motor and proceeded to offload our cases from the coach and prepared to leave.

Suddenly a man appeared out of the shadows from a parked car and spoke our names.  Very weird.

“You come!”  He said, grabbed one case and headed up a set of stairs that could have been borrowed from John Cleese’s set on Faulty Towers.

I whisper to husband: ” I hope there is some food here!”

His whisper to me: “Never mind, Tony will cook for us.”  I had heard this all the way from the airport about an old mate of his in the same area who would cook at any time of day and night at his hotel.

“Maria!” Man called out into the darkness.

Methinks: “What, this is 2011!  This is a hotel, isn’t it?  Internet booked disaster came to mind.”

The smiling Maria, obviously this strange man’s ‘Sybil’, arrived turning on a single light bulb above her head to check that our details were all correct.  I looked into the dark room behind us to see if there were crisp or cold drink dispensers, or ‘Hello’ a bar maybe! The dark lounge promised nothing!  After asking if there was somewhere that we could get a drink and a meal…..

“As you are first guests this season… we give complimentary bottle of water!”  She smiled gesturing towards the man who headed towards what we later knew to be the kitchen.

“He no speaka the English.”  But she smiled, Maria smiled all the time! “You have to go out to places at beach for food or drink, and if come back late door is locked.”

It was getting worse!

The room was basic.  The mood was slowly turning sour and two ice cold bottles of water empty.  We were no longer saying much to each other, and the holiday highs had dropped low into our flip flops.   After I refused to spend a night with only ‘Gavescon’ to drink, our luggage was secured in the room, and we immediately went walking down the unlit road to find supper.

Clearly then our hotel was out of town and quite a way from the seaside.  A point which we were unaware of at the time.

“I am sure Tony’s place is down this way!” My man said turning right at the first pathway, as I hung back staring at the lights straight ahead near the water in the distance.  He went on, and on into the darkness until he found a brick wall.  He remained so optimistic.

“Trust me, I could have been a doctor!” His attempt at humour, trying to make me laugh.

“We will never get anything to eat now, it is so late!  Why don’t we go this way at least there are a few lights!” Yes you guessed, me talking again.

Finally, we were at the waters edge and it WAS beautiful and all that I wanted my holiday to be if only I wasn’t hungry.  There was a beach and loungers but nothing else.

“If we walk to the right we will get to Tony’s place for sure!  He’ll be happy to feed us.”  My ever cheerful husband tried again.

“No, we are going left towards the lights!  At least there may be life!”  My anger charged through my veins and I strutted down the beach path hardly hearing the lapping waves to my right because of the blood pounding in my ears.

The place of light did not disappoint us, there was life.  But I was sceptical as we stood on the outskirts in the darkness and watched the locals sipping beers under the canopies around tables lit by candle light.

“He took my elbow and said quietly, calming the storm: “Lets go and see.”  I was sure he was wrong, there would be no food except weird stuff and raw fish etc.

But amazing, much to my surprise, yes, as he had explained, they would cook for us, no matter what time!!

We found Cavos the first night.  Lovely ‘old boat’ themed restaurant, right beside the sea, filled with wood, old rope hangings and a huge blue real squacking parrot, Pedro. I was actually prepared to eat anything that night…. (maybe not raw fish!)

But surprise followed surprise; special greek salad with extra feta cheese, fresh bread and pork chops with chips; above all my expectations. Did he have dry white wine?  Yes of course, a glass or a caraffe he asks?  Enough said. The man was a HERO.

Our holiday in Faliraki has a sequel, an interesting twist and more…..

Oh, and if we had looked across the bay in the distance we would have seen Tony’s place!!

Valentines Day- Non Event

Just in time- Happy Valentines Day!

'Work Out' each Day

For a small minority in town – Valentine’s Day matters.  It is so discriminatory!th2BKMUQRH

For the rest of us who are anti the special ‘lovey dovey’ day, be it for commercial reasons, ‘past all that crap’, reasons or the simple fact that we are better going it alone and happy that way; what a heap of broken hearts are we!

Commercially speaking it makes loads of money for superstores, restaurants and flower shops, while eating holes in the pockets of some poor unsuspecting suitor who knows he/she has to make the purchase or loose out on the partner.

Discriminatory! and a waste of good money.  Love should not have a price tag!

So what side of the fence are you on, I say what a waste of red ink!

I also say, that there is no such thing as a broken heart, as such, it a kick in the butt of your ego…

So what side of the fence are you on, I say what a waste of red ink!

I also say, that there is no such thing as a broken heart, as such, it a kick in the butt of your ego that is the worst pain.  The fact that you believed in someone and trusted them.

Perhaps you were at fault too, perhaps you ‘sat’ on your butt a bit too much and put nothing into the relationship, ever thought of that?  Or perhaps you ache because you tried too hard, always gave 120% and perhaps it is actually going too OTT, over the top.  That’s your feelings that hurt, not your heart!

However, there are so many others out there who have personal and private  reasons why Valentine’s day hurts.  You be strong!

And for the minority, Happy Valentines Day!

The Picture Says it All

I have not made contact for a while…… as we were busy with our exciting new changes in 2016.  A new country, a new home, a new start.

The move went so well and family rallied around to give welcome support. Yay!!

So grateful to my daughter for taking this shot, as it is the most significant picture of all the pictures taken; because my grandchildren are together and so happy.

The Irish, the English and the Welsh, and yet all South African in a way!

It warms my heart!

Your Life – Make it Work – 2016

Top landscape

We often say, If I knew what I know now……

If we could have started out with a draft of our lives and managed it carefully would it have turned out any different to where you are today?  Remembering – it was only a draft!

I don’t think so.

How many corners has your life turned so far; and I have the cheek to say, so far!  Things can change, even if change isn’t planned, in the blink of an eye.

I am living in my 27th house, and now, I don’t fret about the things I don’t have any more.  “You need to truely recognise and value of what you do have.”  Each move was for a reason and with each came growth.  Yes it is all about the journey and how we savour every minute and learn along the way.  Keep your eyes open.

“The Begining is always today” said Mary Shelley.

New houses don’t make our lives change and improve, we are responsible for that; it is all down to our stamina, drive and perseverance.  You have to want to improve first.

The same goes for moving into a new year- 2016

Resolutions are not going to make any difference if you don’t make them work because they will improve your life and help you to achieve the things that flash through your dreams at night.

2016 brings new changes for all my family.

Happy New Year to all my readers families ‘ – embrace your changes in 2016 with courage and strength, love what you do and believe in yourself.

Simplicity and Christmas

colours 3

Love, love, love this picture and cannot remember where I found it!  It could never be called cluttered or a mess of colour, it simply flows.

It’s coordinated, soft and flimsy.

Yet too much to unpick. Like the cluttered brain of two days before Christmas.

About now you may have decided to go with the flow, what we don’t have we won’t miss; what you failed to find on the supermarket shelf, you simply won’t be eating this year!

‘Simplicity can mean half witted or naïve.’, but you are not that….

Simplicity can be Best.

Too much hype around having the correct meal to present on Christmas day is often overdone.  What about the year, you woke up after your afternoon nap on Christmas day and realized the parsnips had been left out completely, you’d forgotten to cook then!

Did anyone miss them? No.

Christmas day is cluttered with “too much”, but we love that clutter and tend to automatically go over the top, spoil the already too spoilt people we love.

Don’t let trying to be too perfect spoil the happy family time this year; don’t regret what you did not buy or could not buy, enjoy what little you have and be grateful for the day.  A day of celebration, peace, love and joy.

I wish just this, to all who read my words today.

Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year where ever you are.

Grateful for the Day. on Warm Heart Wednesday.

New New New

“New” has to be the best word of the week for me!

Apparently according

Our Lovely London – 2012

to  facebook, blah, blah; “Joy” is my word for 2016.  Well they are so believable this time around, as it is how we would like the year ahead to perform. Bring it on…2016!!

But lets get Christmas behind us first, we often hear this said.  Nooooo…., shouldn’t say that! Christmas is the best time.  And, WOW, the memories we have of Christmas’s past are ours forever.   Christmas is new every year; new memories, new gifts and new things to be thankful for.  Today we have been given a brand new day!

However…… with Christmas out of the way and the New Year, 2016 before us……  If I can squeeze anymore into my happy heart, everything is “new”!  So grateful to be given this chance at this time of my life, a whole new world promises to open up.

Bring it on..2016!

And I think that fits in nicely with Warm Heart Wednesday posts.

A Joyful Journey

#joyfuljourney

th53MVXB9M

I knew as I opened my eyes, that this was what I wanted to write about today. This lovely time of year, and my unexpected journey yesterday. I would struggle to find a reason not to be happy or grateful after this past week.

Christmas music playing in Tesco caught me unawares yesterday; I found myself tearful, tears of joy – so grateful for a normal Christmas, knowing my man was at home dozing in his chair.

Little children on their way home from school in bobbly hats, with flushed cheeks, mittens and boots- a wonderful time of year when you are that age; it warmed my heart to trespass in their little minds for a few seconds.

Hat

Being able to laugh spontaneously with the staff at the deli counter as they danced and sang to the music while serving me. All good stuff!

Was it the joy within me that allowed me to see everything so differently?  If so, I am so grateful.

Hug Yourself

When we are sad, upset and alone and need a hug, we never think to try a ‘lone hug’! They say it works.  Try it!

Hug-yourself

Well, today I could just hug myself out of joy, hug myself because I have opened the door again to my wr1ting, sharing and blogging.  There is healing there too; being able to express myself again; talk about good things, positive steps forward.

Oh, and yesterday I received a most beautifully written message in a card from a really lovely person, a man who sat on our board of management at the charity I used to work for. A real ‘warm’ genuine message.  A Warm Heart Wednesday message.
